Derek feels that he can't trust anyone besides his own pack because of Kate's Betrayal that caused his whole family to die. He has taught himself how to steer clear of anyone who may be threat to him.' Derek, being new to his Family secret, was careless when he started dating Katelyn Argent. She and her family are Werewolf hunters who are very skilled at their "Profession". With the help of some of the locals living in the area, The Argent Family burnt the Hale house to the ground, killing most of the Hale Family. The only survivors were Derek, Peter, Cora and Derek's older sister who was killed by Peter years afterwards. Peter was supposedly paralyzed from the incident that killed most of his family, but was tricking everyone. Peter was the Alpha who turned Scott and killed innocent people, and even attacked Lydia Martin, who survived the attack somehow.
Derek Hale killed Peter, becoming the Alpha of Beacon Hills. He then started causing problems for Scott and the others when he started making a Pack of his own. He turned Erica Reyes, Isaac Lehey, and Boyd. After his pack was formed, Lydia kidnapped Derek and used him to somehow Ressurect Peter back from the dead, using the Full Moon. There was also the problem concerning Jackson Whittemore who he had bitten to become a Werewolf to end up killing him, but instead Jackson became something more fearsome than a Werewolf. He became what was called a Kanima.
The Human that was controlling him was drowned by none other than Allison's Grandfather, Gerard Argent, who used Jackson to try and kill Scott and everyone else and have Derek turn him into a Werewolf to win over his battle with cancer, but failed. Jackson then became a Werewolf and fled the scene after Gerard had escaped.
Four months passed, and Derek isolated Scott from the Werewolf lifestyle so he could be normal, and without him knowing about the Alpha Pack that had recently showed up. He had Isaac track and Infiltrate the Alpha Pack's hideout which was in Crystal Waters. Why Derek had Isaac tracking them is because they have Erica and Boyd trapped, and Derek is going to stop at nothing to save them, but that becomes rather difficult when Scott and his friends appear in Crystal Waters as well.'
